A Clear Vision in Retinal Diseases

At Boehringer Ingelheim, we have expanded our global research and development activities to tackle eye conditions, specifically those affecting the back of the eye (the retina).

Retinal Health

Over 300 million people worldwide are at risk of vision loss due to retinal disease, and this number is rising. 1 Sight loss  can have a profound impact on independence and connection to the world, leading to depression, isolation and reduced quality of life.2 For many people living with retinal conditions, diagnosis is late and treatment available only after irreversible damage has occurred. For some retinal conditions, treatments don’t exist at all. As a society, we must do more to address the practical, physical and emotional burden that people with vision loss experience.

At Boehringer Ingelheim, for the last ten years, we have been building a diverse pipeline, combining innovative treatment approaches with the latest AI technology. We are working towards the ultimate goal of earlier detection of retinal conditions, and prompt delivery of the right treatment at the right time.

We are committed to deepening understanding of the disease pathways and multifactorial pathophysiology underlying retinal conditions to help us understand disease progression, and exploring novel endpoints, prognostic and predictive biomarkers to provide targeted solutions that address the specific disease characteristics for each person.

To help us achieve our goals, we are building strong partnerships with external partners at all stages of development, to co-create and pioneer advancements in retinal health, from clinical trials through to clinical practice. Empathy drives everything we do, as we also seek to deeply understand the lived experience of those with retinal conditions so we can translate our work into meaningful patient-centered outcomes, and help drive the change that is so desperately needed.

A future where earlier detection and individualized treatment will stop vision loss in its tracks, protecting and preserving both eyesight, and way of life.
